What is expungement?
Expungement is a legal process in which criminal convictions or arrests are “sealed.” Once a criminal record is expunged, the record is invisible to the public. This means that a potential landlord or employer will not be able to see your criminal conviction or arrest when completing a background check. If a record is expunged, you are also legally able to deny that you have a record, in most cases.
It is important to note that in some cases, the record may still be visible. For example, government agencies may be able to see the criminal record.
What types of criminal offenses are able to be expunged?
Many criminal offenses are eligible for expungement. The following list includes some of the crimes that are eligible for expungement:
• Arson
• Assault
• Battery
• Burglary
• Car jacking
• Child abuse
• Child Sex Acts
• Communications fraud act violations
• Domestic violence
• Drug trafficking
• Illegal use of explosives
• Homicide
• Kidnapping
• Lewd or lascivious acts on children or elderly
• Manslaughter
• Robbery
